Why Is the Third Hire Harder Than the First?
The first matched developer usually works out. The role was clear, the match was good, and the person joined a team that already had architecture opinions, a review standard and a definition of done. One contractor can lean on all of that.
The third and fourth cannot, because by then they are a large part of the team they are supposed to lean on. Matched separately, they arrive with no shared history, and nobody on the supplier side is answerable for whether they ship one coherent release. Sequencing, code standards and performance conversations stay with you.

What happens if an engineer is the wrong fit?
Lemon.io advertises a replacement guarantee, with replacements matched within about a day. StepTo runs a two-week paid trial and replaces an engineer at no cost within the first 30 days; after that, a performance-improvement process applies before any replacement. StepTo engineers average 2.5+ years on a client engagement, so replacements are rare.
